I am a big fan of RAW, and I agree that to get the best results for maximum creativity that is obviously best. No, you do not need to shoot RAW for "serious" grading. What is "serious" grading? Is it different from "massive" grading.

"limited" grading? "massive" grading? "serious" grading? what are those? Obviously, if you go to extremes, you can get banding, but in practice it is very rare and mostly due to too high compression in rendering, not the limits of 10 bit or camera compression. This has so much hyperbole, it needs a response. With any camera recording H.264/265, get as close to the intended look in the camera as you can. If you need that, get a camera with RAW recording. In general, such cameras are not a great source for serious grading.

Apart from that, most scenes don't use the full 8 or 10 bit in Slog, so massive grading can always lead to banding. Of course, Slog is more flexible, but it can also fall apart with the massive compression, even in 10 bit.
